Summary Report on Mumbai Dinner/Meet by Gordon de La Motte
Just a few lines to first thank Shyam and Russel for organinsing a wonderful evening at the Palm Grove Hotel, Juhu. Thomas Abraham flew in all the way from Kotayam just to catch up with all of us and to share with us his experiences of his time spent at SHY and Montfort. Remember he was at these two schools between 1946 and 1952 when many at the gathering were not yet born. Shyam opened the evening thanking Russel for the motivation he enthused in us getting this show on the road, from just a few couples meeting to have a few drinks and dinner, to the gathering of 36 that made it to the party. He shared with us some memorable moments he spent at SHY and his transfer to Montfort. He then requested Russel to say a few words. Russel in all humility thanked a number of fellow students who assisted in making the 2010 reunion the success that it turned out to be. The task of organising a reunion of such magnitude needed the help of any one who could put his/her hand up and be counted. The takers were many, and to that he was grateful. Shyam then requested us to take the stage and share with the gathering our experiences. A few of us did take the stage and narrated some of our memorable moments very briefly.
A compacted version of the 2010 reunion was shown and those present, who also attended the 2010 reunion, relived those joyful experiences through this audio visual. For the rest of us who did not attend, it was a moment to behold the camaraderie that we saw and enjoyment it produced. It gave us time to reflect on the past when we were students with these prestigious institutions. From the time we assembled at Madras (Chennai) Railway Station to board the train to Salem, the bus ride up the ghats and eventually our entrance into the confines of our schools. I must admit, the joy and fun our fellow students had on the train ride from Chennai to Salem in 2010, was not what we use to experience during our schooling days. For us it was gloom and sadness having to leave the family and friends behind on our journey to school.
The evening went off very well. Here once again I must thank Shyam for the details in selecting the Hors d'oeuvre's which was plenty and very efficiently served by the hotel staff. The soft drinks were taken around for those among us who did not partake of the more lethal form of quenching our parched lips. The buffet dinner was extremely tasty with a mixture of Chinese and Indian cuisine and plentiful to boot.
Shyam surprised us all with mementos that I sure will find it's way to our mantelpieces. There were three such souvenirs, each telling us a story from our name tags to a plaque commemorating our reunion. A rather weighty three dimensional glass cube with the Montfort Emblem engraved in it was part of the memento, and last but also of significance, a wind up musical, for want of another name, let's call it a paper weight. Whenever we wind it and release it to play a jingle, it will always remind us of that first and I am sure will not be the last reunion of the SHY girls and the Montfort Boys in Mumbai.
Once again, thank you Russel for the motivation in making us believe that where there is a will, we can make it work. And my dear class mate Shyam for all the effort you put in to make the evening a grand success.
